As a part of a multibillion-dollar modernization program, W.E. O’Neil is partnering with Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and design firm Woods Bagot to deliver this monumental project.
LAX’s newest concourse addition will add eight gates for narrow-body aircraft in an accelerated timeline through an innovative and adaptive Offsite Construction and Relocation (OCR) building technique—first-of-its-kind at LAX and only the second at a U.S. airfield. MSC South will be built in nine segments roughly a mile and a half away from the project’s site and then carefully delivered and assembled in place with a high degree of control and supervision.
This critical piece of infrastructure will further support the airport’s capacity-building goals in advance of the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympic and Paralympic games.
The new terminal boasts a design that is harmonious with the existing renovation of Tom Bradley International Terminal and the West Gates. The nine-segment structural system will allow for greater flexibility and the ability to build quickly without significantly impacting airport operations.
The new two-story, eight-gate complex will have an L-shaped footprint directly connecting to the passenger concourse of the West Gates on its second floor. A signature element of the design is an array of aluminum sunshades that are echoed throughout the passenger concourse interior.
W.E. O’Neil completed preconstruction and is now mobilizing this project, which is being designed to achieve LEED Silver.
