Design-Build
The Tongva Park and Genser Square project for the City of Santa Monica is a prime example of design-build success, exceeding the City and community’s expectation of taking an inspiring idea into full functioning fruition. This seamless process of design, coordination and construction was a well-choreographed dance between all team members, utilizing the most cutting-edge technologies and management processes, ensuring a successfully executed project, worthy of DBIA design-build notability.
Genser Town Square, a 1.2-acre site directly in front of Santa Monica City Hall on Main Street, and Tongva Park, a 6.2-acre site across the street from Genser Town Square, occupies most of the block bounded by Main Street, and Olympic Drive, Ocean Avenue, and the Interstate 10 Freeway.
Inspired by the Southern California Arroyo landscape of washes and ravines that once defined the site, a series of braided pathways appear to organically emerge from the footsteps of City Hall, extend west to Ocean Avenue, and weave the park into the fabric of the city. Dramatic rising and falling topography reinforces the fluid pathway system and organizes the site into four thematic hilltop areas:
Each calibrates to different primary use and experience. Ken Genser Square provides new space for civic gathering and complements the City Hall landmark building.
