Plumbers Local 130 UA Training Center

W.E. O’Neil collaborated with Gensler for the design-build delivery of a new 48,000 SF three-story training center. The project was built as a teaching tool for apprentices and incorporates state-of-the-art technologies and plumbing training workshops.

Inside, walls that would have normally been opaque were built to be transparent so apprentices and visitors can see the plumbing. Unique features include advanced water conservation technologies, educational spaces such as “hot works” classrooms, and a three-story workshop mimicking a traditional Chicago three-flat which allows apprentices to put their skills to the test in real-life scenarios within the walls of the facility.

Together with Gensler, W.E. O’Neil delivered on the Plumbers’ vision to embody their trade within the building, with copper pipe, galvanized steel, and black pipe serving as design inspiration for material selection and installation throughout.

Incorporating many sustainable features such as rainwater harvesting and a graywater system, the facility serves as an example of the Plumbers Local 130 UA leading the way in water conservation within the industry.
